      <image:title>Modern Pictorialism - Modern Pictorialism</image:title>
<image:caption>"There are beautiful pictures and pictures of beautiful things.” ~anon Dan Jackson’s ongoing Modern Pictorialism series spans two decades of work. Shot using a variety of classical and modern technologies, these works address how photography is used; to lie, to document, to objectify and convey status historically and how these values have changed over time. This series ennobles the vulgar and mundane and disrupts what we hold sacred and beautiful. At times satirical and irreverent, Modern Pictorialism takes a light hearted look at the self-importance that lead to Pictorialism’s collapse and it’s impact on painting and art history.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What It Is - What It Is</image:title>
<image:caption>What if, instead of thinking of photography as a method of freezing time, we were to think of it as freezing wavelengths of colour? Using photos of industrial spaces as a template, Jackson applies colour to strip away any context or meaning. Though there were options for computer automation and mechanizing the production of these images Jackson chose instead to painstakingly hand trace and digitally colour each object, allowing human consciousness to intervene in the manufacturing process. Reconstructing and transforming utilitarian environments into surreal landscapes, Jackson offers a fictional world where multiple frequencies and fragments of time are presented simultaneously. The large scale detailed photos encourage the viewer to engage the work up close. But doing so is an act of entropy, where the viewer them-self initiates their collapse into disorder. The result is a frenetic, whimsical celebration of colour that blurs the line between representation and abstraction and challenges our perception of photography as a system of documentation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What if, instead of thinking of photography as a method of freezing time, we were to think of it as freezing wavelengths of colour? Using photos of industrial spaces as a template, Jackson applies colour to strip away any context or meaning. Though some options exist for computer automation and mechanizing the production of these images Jackson chose instead to painstakingly hand trace and digitally colour each object, allowing human consciousness to intervene in the manufacturing process.

      <image:title>Space In Bird - Space In Bird</image:title>
<image:caption>Complications from eye surgeries and corrective lenses to alleviate a condition known as Strabismus have misaligned the speed at which Jackson perceives different colour frequencies. This brain/eye disconnection resulted in an over-correction and exaggerated sense of three dimensional space. These side effects prompted Jackson to explore how colour informs and transforms objects and space. Using finches as a motif Jackson created individual colour spaces that reflect each bird's unique plumage. As the series progresses day turns to night and the finches fragment and fly away, eventually transforming into pure forms of movement and colour. Space In Bird is presented alongside journal entries that shed light on the process, inner turmoil and self-doubt of an artist revelling in colour while confronting his ever changing perception of colour and space.</image:caption>
